VRV & VRF: cooling by zone

Understand the shared outdoor system, individual indoor units and the connections between them.

01 / THE BIG PICTURE

Start with the essentials.

VRF means variable refrigerant flow. Multiple indoor units share an outdoor refrigerant system, with controls responding to demand across the connected zones. VRV is Daikin’s trademark for its version of this technology.

02 / STEP BY STEP

How the system works.

  1. 01

    Each zone measures demand

The room controller and sensors provide information about the conditions in that zone.

  2. 02

    Indoor equipment responds

The indoor unit adjusts its operation within the capabilities of the system and controller.

  3. 03

    The outdoor system coordinates

Outdoor equipment responds to the combined demand from connected units.

  4. 04

    The network matters

Pipe branches, communication wiring and control settings must match the manufacturer’s design requirements.

03 / LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER

The details that matter.

Shared system, shared consequences

A local drain problem may affect one unit, while an outdoor module or system fault can affect several rooms. Record whether the problem is isolated or widespread.

Fresh air is a separate question

VRF provides cooling or heating through refrigerant. Ventilation must still be considered; a fresh-air unit may be part of the complete design.

Replacement requires compatibility checks

Indoor and outdoor model combinations, refrigerant, piping and controls need verification. A new unit cannot be selected only by capacity or connector appearance.

04 / AT A GLANCE

Keep these distinctions clear.

THE KEY TAKEAWAY

When reporting a fault, include the outdoor system ID and the affected room units. The room with the symptom may not contain the cause.

05 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Good questions to ask.

Can individual rooms have different settings?

Suitable controls allow zone settings, but operation remains subject to system capabilities and restrictions.

Do more indoor units always improve flexibility?

The allowed combination, connected capacity and pipe layout must remain within manufacturer limits.
